Mob Psycho 100 Episode 1 Overview

Mob Psycho 100

Episode 1

I would like to first say thank you to those of you who have commented so far and have given recommendations!
With that being said, I'll be reviewing a show recommended by jstnlcst.

After reading a synopsis of the show, I was pretty intrigued as I'm not big on the horror/paranormal genre quite yet. I really enjoyed Jujutsu Kaisen and thought it seemed like a similar comparison. I saw that the studio who created this animation was Bones Inc. who also animated shows I've been wanting to watch like Fullmetal Alchemist and My Hero Academia. Once I saw some of the design elements, I noticed it closely resembles One Punch Man and maybe a bit of Rick and Morty aesthetically. Shows who's style aren't my personal favorite but you can't judge a book by it's cover.

The show open's with the main character gradually becoming overtaken? There's a meter getting its way up to 100, hence the title, while he's being attacked. Multiple monsters are attacking him while he gets closer and closer to going "berserk" or reaching his ultimate power level. Let me tell you! When he does reach that point, it was enough to make me want to stick around for some more fight scenes. The action was a great start and caught my eye with the introduction of the MC. If you're a fan of Naruto just imagine the MC powering up with the appearance of when Naruto goes 6 tails in the Pain arc.

The scenes progress with background information that evil spirits are a regular occurance in this show, when normal people are asking "Psychics" for help. The first psychic we meet is a con-man pretending to be one for money by the name of "Reigen Arataka". He swindles a women having nightmares of evil spirits into paying for his services only to find out he has no power at all to actually rid the evil spirits away. At this point he calls upon his co-worker who we find out is the MC, "Shigeo Kageyama" or Mob. He comes in cool and calm with a flaming aura around him to handle this evil spirit. I'd advise to watch this part for more details.

We fast forward and learn a bit more about the MC and the con-man's dynamic. Mob heads home and we see his abilities as a psychic are known to his family but what's interesting is he's only a middle schooler! He ends up back with Reigen the next day as Shigeo's meter incrementally goes up each time he uses his powers it seems. Reigen turns out to be Mob's "master" as he teaches him ways to become a better psychic. The details finishing out of this episode are better left for yourselves. You can see some more of Mob's abilities taking down spirits as well as his strength without me giving away the spoilers of the good stuff.

Overall, I'd say it's a mixture of all the shows I listed early on for it's visual comparison. The fight scenes are cool so far, not too much action but still a fun watch. The characters are great for just one episode. The comedy elements of the show are pretty deadpan and very anime-esk if that makes sense to you. The show flowed nicely and gave just enough to definitely be interested in watching more episodes.

Check this one out if you're a fan of the paranormal vibes but don't like the gore of fighting style action animes. It's only 37 episodes in total with 20 minute long episodes. It's not too daunting of a watch and definitely binge worthy if you're looking for something quick and new. See you all next week!

Bai Bai!
